Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy (Manipulative/Sports Physiotherapy)

The School of Physiotherapy offers a number of Postgraduate Programmes in the area of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy.  In 2010, the School added distance learning options to the Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, Manipulative Physiotherapy and Sports Physiotherapy programmes.  Enrolment on a part-time basis in the distance learning papers will enable clinicians to continue with their professional commitments, whilst enjoying a course that develops their clinical skills and thinking through to Masters level.

Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy

The Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy programme offers a graduated structured study plan enabling suitably qualified physiotherapists to progress from a Postgraduate Diploma through to a Master of Physiotherapy endorsed in the areas of Manipulative  Physiotherapy or Sports Physiotherapy.

Manipulative Physiotherapy

Manipulation

The postgraduate programmes endorsed in Manipulative Physiotherapy is designed to advance the practical and clinical reasoning skills of the physiotherapist managing patients with disorders of the musculoskeletal system, such as chronic spinal problems.

The programme emphasises an integrated clinical approach, using concepts and techniques from a variety of approaches to manual therapy, manipulation and exercise, underpinned by an understanding of clinical anatomy, medical specialties and other relevant disciplines.

Clinical practice is supervised by leading manipulative physiotherapists in a small group format, providing an ideal opportunity to facilitate the development of clinical expertise

Sports Physiotherapy

The postgraduate programme in Sports Physiotherapy provides the physiotherapist currently working in the area of musculoskeletal physiotherapy with the opportunity to advance their knowledge, competence and skills in a sports and exercise-specific educational environment.

The programme incorporates a multidisciplinary approach, including contributions from the University of Otago Schools of Medicine, Medical Sciences, Pharmacy and Physical Education. There is a strong biomedical focus in anatomy and pathophysiology that underpins the development of clinical reasoning and practical skills in sports physiotherapy.

Learning is consolidated in a variety of specialised clinical settings, dealing with elite athletes and working with sports clinicians, academics and coaches.

There is a strong emphasis on exercise-based rehabilitation, manual/manipulative therapy and clinical sports medicine multi-skilling.
